Fibre Extension
The measurement of mean distance between the extremities of an individual flax staple represents a mechanical assessment of fibre length distribution across a processed sample. This span length determines how machinery settings are adjusted during the drafting phase of spinning. Testing technicians place a tuft of flax into a comb array to align the ends, creating a surface where a photoelectric scanner registers the intensity of reflected light at varying distances from the clamping line.
The device calculates the distance at which a specific percentage of fibres remain in contact, identifying the two point five percent and fifty percent indices. These values inform the mill manager about the uniformity of the lot. Longer fibres produce a smoother yarn with higher tensile strength during the ring spinning operation.
Precise control of this parameter prevents waste by adjusting roll settings to match the actual material properties.
Drafting Requirement
Production lines rely on these calculations to set the distance between roller nips in the spinning frame. Improper calibration causes fibre breakage when the roll gap sits below the necessary distance for the current flax population. Spinning mills record these statistics on the batch production card to ensure traceability from the raw material supplier through to the final sliver.
If the mill processes flax with a high degree of variation, the drafting system encounters uneven friction, which results in thick or thin spots within the yarn. Engineers define the acceptable deviation for a specific product line to maintain consistency across output batches. The mill inspector audits the drafting zone settings by comparing the current fibre length data against the technical specification provided by the buyer.
Buyer Tolerance
Commercial contracts specify a minimum mean length for flax fibre to guarantee the quality of the finished woven textile. Linen manufacturers reject shipments where the span length falls below the agreed contract threshold because low values decrease the efficiency of the loom and cause excessive dust. Each party retains a calibrated set of combs to verify the measurements upon delivery.
Any dispute over the grade involves a joint retesting protocol using the same standardised method to reach a settlement. High fibre consistency allows for higher production speeds.
