Physical Property
Breaking force of an individual thread calculated per unit of its linear density is the primary measure of yarn strength used in flax spinning and weaving. This single yarn tenacity is determined by tensile testing machines that pull a sample to failure under controlled speed and tension. The results are expressed in centinewtons per tex and recorded on the yarn testing certificate.
Weaving Influence
Weaving on modern high-speed looms subjects the yarn to intense cyclic stresses during shed opening and weft insertion. Low single yarn tenacity leads to frequent breaks in the warp, which forces the loom to stop and reduces the overall efficiency of the weaving shed. Flax fibers must be spun with optimal twist and combed thoroughly to ensure that the yarn has the strength to withstand these forces.
Sizing processes are applied to the yarn to temporarily boost this value before the yarn is loaded onto the loom.
Finish Assessment
Yarns with high tenacity values produce stronger finished fabrics that meet demanding buyer specifications for durability. If the tenacity falls below the acceptable limit, the yarn is redirected to weft use or blended with stronger synthetic fibers. This assessment protects the weaving mill from producing weak, low-grade fabrics.
