Fibre Metrology
Flax fibre evaluation begins in the sorting shed where staple length establishes the natural span of unbroken strands pulled from the retted stem. Inspectors record this physical dimension on the lot ledger before drafting begins because individual strands vary widely across a single harvest. Short fragments drop into low grade utility bins while long spans advance to the drafting frames for high tension drawing.
Chinese mill operators measure handfuls by hand against a calibrated wooden board to determine average draw performance without machinery interference. Buyer contracts specify minimum mean limits for each bale lot, and any consignment falling below that threshold triggers a price penalty or rejection at the warehouse door. Mill standards require tighter tolerances than general trade rules demand, forcing graders to discard borderline stock that commercial brokers might accept.
Drafting Mechanics
Drawing frames pull aligned ribbons through successive pairs of rollers rotating at accelerating speeds to straighten overlapping ends. Longer strands bridge the gap between nip points securely, whereas brief segments escape control and cause drafting irregularities in the sliver. Operators adjust roller distance according to the measured span recorded during initial sorting to prevent fibre breakage under heavy mechanical strain.
Heavy slivers require stable geometry to maintain uniform linear density during subsequent spinning operations on ring frames. Poor control over short fractions leads directly to uneven yarn diameter and high breakage rates during high speed twisting.
Yarn Quality
Spun yarn strength depends heavily on frictional contact between overlapping strands along the continuous length of the product. Longer spans increase surface contact area and frictional resistance, producing smooth yarns with high tensile strength for fine linen cloth production. Weaving mills inspect finished yarn packages for hairiness and breaking load before releasing bobbins to the looms for fabric formation.
Fabric grade specifications prohibit excessive fuzziness, linking surface smoothness directly back to raw material sorting consistency at the start of production. Final export documentation certifies that woven cloth meets strict buyer parameters for tensile performance and visual uniformity.
