Executing gravimetric testing requires a sensitive balance capable of recording minute changes in mass within a controlled laboratory environment. The operator weighs the original flax sample and kemudian submits it to heating at one hundred and five degrees Celsius for several hours. Once dry, the sample is weighed again to identify the precise percentage of volatile content present at the time of purchase.

Reliable gravimetric testing prevents the accidental payment for excess water weight or non-fiber contaminants such as dust or straw fragments. This objective figure settles disputes between the spinning mill and the raw material provider regarding lot quality.

Moisture Equilibrium

The results from gravimetric testing dictate how much water must be added back into the fiber bundle to ensure ideal spinning conditions. Flax works best when it contains approximately twelve percent moisture by weight. This empirical data ensures the machine settings match the true density of the processed material.
