Particulate Waste
Dry powder accumulation beneath the warp beam and heald frames in a weaving room consists of lost adhesive materials and fiber fragments. Excessive sizing shedding occurs when the protective starch film fails to adhere to the flax yarn or becomes brittle during drying. This issue creates a dusty working environment and indicates that the sizing formula requires immediate adjustment.
Loom Friction
Continuous mechanical friction from the reed and heald wires rubs the size coating off the yarn surface as it travels through the loom. Controlling sizing shedding is essential to maintain the lubricity that prevents flax yarn from fraying. When size flakes off prematurely, the exposed fibers rub against each other, increasing heald wear and causing frequent yarn breaks.
Quality Defect
Residual sizing dust can settle on the woven cloth, which leads to uneven results during subsequent bleaching and dyeing. This variation is often recorded during greige cloth inspections, where clusters of size deposits are flagged as defects. If the problem persists, the finished fabric will exhibit blotches where dye was unable to penetrate the stubborn polymer residues.
These blotches can lead to the rejection of entire rolls of linen by the garment manufacturer, causing financial losses for the weaving mill.
