Acceptable Deviation
Allowable margins of variation between the planned weight of finished textile products and the actual weight produced are established to manage material variances. In contract agreements for linen supply, the yield tolerance specifies the range within which the weight of the delivered fabric may deviate from the order specifications without triggering penalties. This percentage is stated on the buyer’s purchase contract and is monitored by the quality control department.
Production Variance
Variability in raw flax fiber quality and moisture absorption makes it difficult to achieve an exact target yield on every loom run. When a mill spins a batch of yarn, the actual output may vary slightly due to shifts in combing losses or spinning breaks, which are kept within the yield tolerance. Weaving mills track these variances by weighing every finished roll of fabric before it is packed for shipment.
If the output falls below the agreed minimum, the mill must compensate the buyer for the missing yardage or adjust the invoice. Keeping within this margin requires tight control over the relative humidity of the spinning and weaving sheds.
Contract Compliance
Fabric deliveries that fall outside the specified tolerance limits can be rejected by the importing customer or subjected to discounts. These contract tolerances protect both the spinner and the buyer from unavoidable fluctuations in organic fibre processing. The final yield calculation is documented on the export packing list.
