Combing Specification
Technical specifications for hackling and combing machines define the number of steel pins per unit of length on the transport bars. Adjusting the pinned bar density allows the spinning mill to control the degree of refinement applied to the flax bundles as they move through the preparation line. Fine pins are required for high count yarns while coarser pins handle raw tow.
Drafting Precision
Interaction between the fibres and the pins determines the efficiency of shive removal and the alignment of the long flax. A higher pinned bar density increases the friction on the sliver, which necessitates a careful balance between cleaning and fibre breakage. If the pins are too close together for the fibre diameter, the material will bunch and cause a machine stoppage.
This setting is changed for each different linen count. Operators must monitor the comb for heat build up that indicates excessive friction. They adjust the feed rate to prevent damage to the delicate flax strands.
Fibre Separation
Operational life of the hackle bars depends on the hardness of the flax and the speed of the production line. Regular inspection of the pinned bar density ensures that bent or missing pins do not create streaks in the finished yarn. Maintenance schedules are built around the wear patterns observed during the processing of coarse grades.
