Strength Measurement
Mechanical resistance testing of bast bundles determines the maximum tensile force a grouping of flax fibres can withstand before rupture occurs. Mill operators measure flax bundle tenacity to grade the quality of raw flax shipments before they enter the spinning line. This measurement defines the yarn strength that can be achieved during spinning and weaving operations.
High tenacity values generally correlate with long, mature flax fibres that have undergone proper retting.
Testing Protocol
Standardized testing employs a bundle tester that clamps a prepared ribbon of flax fibres between two jaws and applies a continuously increasing force until the bundle breaks. The technician measures the break force and the linear density of the specimen to calculate the tenacity in centinewtons per tex. This assessment requires extremely precise sample preparation to ensure that all fibres in the clamped area are parallel and under uniform tension.
Any misalignment or uneven clamping leads to premature breakage and falsely low results. The measured values are recorded on the raw material acceptance certificate to verify that the batch meets the buyer’s criteria.
Spinning Yield
Bundle strength dictates the efficiency of the spinning process by reducing the frequency of yarn breaks on the frame. It also helps the weaver determine the tension limits for warp yarns on high-speed industrial looms. Consistent tenacity minimizes machine downtime and stabilizes fabric quality.
