Recovery Measurement
Ratio of long line fibre to total raw straw weight defines the output quality of the initial mechanical processing stage. Flax mills track fiber scutching yield to evaluate the efficiency of their scutching machinery and the spin-readiness of the raw crop. This percentage indicates how much high-value spinnable material remains after the woody shives have been broken and beaten away.
Extraction Efficiency
Adjustment of the distance between the breaking rollers and the scutching turbines is required to optimize fiber recovery. Achieving a high fiber scutching yield depends on the moisture level of the flax straw, as overly dry straw breaks into short tow fibers instead of remaining as long line flax. Mill supervisors record the scutching yield in the shift report, detailing the weight of the raw straw inputs against the long fiber bundles retrieved.
This balance directly influences the cost structure of the spinning mill, since long fiber commands a much higher price than the byproduct tow.
Grading Outcome
Classification of the raw material follows the measured efficiency of the extraction process. When the fiber scutching yield falls below eighteen percent, the batch is categorized as lower grade and diverted to coarse yarn production. Buyers use these metrics to negotiate discounts or to reject batches that do not meet the raw material specifications.
