Mass Assessment
An international testing standard defines the laboratory methods used to measure the mass per unit area of manufactured or knitted textiles. The procedure known as fabric density ISO 3801 establishes a uniform protocol for determining how many grams a square meter of flax cloth weighs under controlled moisture conditions. Linen fabrics are highly hygroscopic, which means they absorb or release moisture depending on the surrounding air.
This standard guarantees that buyers and sellers in different countries evaluate fabric weight using identical parameters, preventing disputes over material consumption and thickness.
Specimen Preparation
Execution of this laboratory test requires specific environmental conditioning to ensure consistent results. Technicians must expose the flax fabric samples to a standard atmosphere for twenty-four hours before using a circular cutter to extract a sample of exactly one hundred square centimeters. This sample is then weighed on a high-precision digital balance to calculate the mass per square meter.
If the measured weight falls below the buyer’s tolerance limits, it suggests a loose structure or a thinner yarn diameter than contracted.
Compliance Metric
The test report generated by the mill’s quality department provides the formal proof of compliance required for export clearance. Buyers use this density measurement to calculate shipping volumes, fabric hand feel, and dye absorption rates.
