Static Mitigation
Ionization equipment provides a controlled stream of alpha particles to neutralize electrostatic charges on moving textiles during high-speed mechanical processing. Spun flax bundles frequently generate high surface charges during dry combing due to the low residual moisture of the plant tissue, which causes individual filaments to repel each other and disrupts the formation of a cohesive sliver. Deploying alpha ionization static control in the drawing zone reduces this mutual repulsion, allowing the fibers to align parallel to each other.
This prevents fiber lapping around the steel drafting rollers and reduces downtime during high-speed drawing.
Technical Mechanism
Polonium-210 sources emit high-energy alpha particles that ionize the surrounding air molecules, creating pairs of positive and negative ions that are drawn to the oppositely charged linen yarn. These neutral gas atoms collide with the fiber surfaces, neutralizing the static charge. This occurs rapidly and is confined to a small region near the source because alpha radiation has a short range in air, ensuring that the process is localized and safe for operators.
Mill Performance
Using this localized neutralization method during dry spinning improves yarn evenness and minimizes hairiness. This is because neutralized fibers remain within the main yarn body rather than flaring outward under electrostatic forces. Daily audits of fiber sliver alignment confirm that mechanical drag decreases by a measurable degree when ionizing bars operate continuously in the drafting zone, which prevents localized yarn breaks.
