Polymer Compound
Synthetic sizing chemicals applied to yarn warp sheets generate a protective, cohesive layer that prevents yarn breakage during loom processing. In the manufacture of linen, using an acrylic sizing copolymer helps overcome the natural stiffness and irregularities of flax fibres. This chemical additive adheres to the fibre surface, creating a continuous shield that absorbs frictional forces.
Mechanical Reinforcement
Yarn durability under the high mechanical stress of the loom requires a sizing agent that offers both high adhesion and elasticity. When flax yarns are treated with an acrylic sizing copolymer, the polymer matrix penetrates the yarn body, locking the inner fibres together and increasing the overall tensile strength. Without this synthetic reinforcement, the frequent abrasive movements of the heald eyes and reed would rapidly shred the yarn, resulting in loom stoppages and uneven fabric.
This copolymer provides the necessary flexibility to allow the stiff flax to bend without fracturing.
Desizing Characteristic
Aqueous solubility allows the protective film to be removed during finishing without leaving chemical residues that interfere with dyeing. Because the acrylic sizing copolymer is soluble in hot water or mild alkaline solutions, it washes out completely. This ensures that the final linen fabric achieves a consistent colour and a soft hand.
