Statistical Measurement
Numerical percentages represent the variation in weight per unit length along a strand of spun thread. Recording the yarn mass CV provides the mill with a standardized metric for the structural uniformity of the linen being produced. This measurement is obtained by running yarn samples through a capacitive testing instrument at high speeds.
A low value indicates a highly uniform yarn, while a high value reveals numerous thin or thick places.
Production Influence
Raw material quality and the condition of the spinning frame drafting zone directly determine this metric. A high yarn mass CV often points to worn drafting aprons or poor blending of flax fibers of different lengths. This uneven mass distribution leads to tension spikes during weaving, which increases warp breaks and causes stop-start delays on the loom.
The resulting woven cloth will display visible lines and uneven dye uptake across its width.
Quality Categorization
Quality managers record this value on the export batch release document to verify compliance with international buyers. High values of yarn mass CV often prevent the release of the lot until further testing is completed. Standardized grading tables classify the yarn into different quality tiers based on this percentage.
