Production Efficiency
Performance metrics in the wet spinning department measure the weight ratio of finished yarn produced against the initial weight of the roving fed into the machines. These wet spinning yield ratios reflect the combined effects of fiber loss, yarn breakage, and moisture absorption during hot-water spinning. High ratios indicate efficient processing with minimal fibre waste and optimal machine settings.
Mills compile these figures in their shift-end efficiency reports to track yarn yield.
Wet Process
Processing flax through a hot water bath softens the natural pectins and allows the fibres to slide past each other during drafting. This thermal softening is essential for producing fine, smooth linen yarn, but it also leads to the loss of soluble matter and short fibres. The wet spinning yield ratios account for these losses alongside any breaks on the frame.
If the water temperature or acidity is incorrect, excessive fiber loss occurs, which degrades the yield. Spinners monitor the bath parameters closely to keep the ratios within acceptable tolerances.
Material Reconciliation
Yield calculations are compared against the buyer’s yarn quantity requirements and the mill’s raw material allocation. If the ratios fall below the target, the mill must adjust its pricing or source higher-grade roving. These assessments are maintained in the department’s material reconciliation log.
