Mechanical Compression Force
The force applied by a pair of rollers to remove excess liquid from a wet yarn sheet or fabric represents a critical process variable in textile finishing and sizing. The squeeze roller nip pressure determines the amount of liquid sizing agent or chemical finish that remains in the yarn before it enters the drying chamber. This pressure is measured in kilonewtons per meter or pounds per square inch and must be controlled to ensure uniform chemical application.
Sizing Fluid Retention
Adjusting this force allows the sizing machine operator to control the pick-up percentage of the sizing mixture. High pressure squeezes out more liquid, leaving a thinner, more compact starch film on the yarn surface. For flax yarns, which are highly absorbent, precise control of this pressure is necessary to prevent the core of the yarn from remaining too wet while the outer surface is over-dried.
This force must be distributed evenly across the width of the rollers to avoid variation in moisture across the warp sheet.
Warp Performance Outcome
Inconsistent or incorrect pressure across the rollers results in uneven warp sizing, which leads to yarn breakages and fabric defects during weaving. A well-calibrated sizing line avoids these issues by monitoring this force continuously.
