Fiber Binding Structure
The helical orientation of fibers around the central axis of a yarn provides the necessary cohesion and strength for subsequent textile processes. Adequate spun yarn twist is essential to hold the relatively stiff flax fibers together and prevent the yarn from shedding or breaking under tension. This parameter is measured in turns per meter or turns per inch and varies depending on the intended use of the yarn.
Linen Spinning Mechanism
Spinners introduce this twist during the ring-spinning or rotor-spinning process by rotating the yarn package relative to the delivery rollers. Wet-spun flax yarns typically require less twist than dry-spun yarns because the softened natural pectins help bind the fibers together upon drying. The direction of the twist, designated as S or Z twist, is also controlled to suit specific weaving or knitting requirements.
Technicians measure this parameter using twist testers to ensure it falls within the required specification for each batch.
Fabric Durability Effect
Insufficient or excessive twist values directly affect the feel and performance of the woven fabric. Low twist produces a soft, absorbent linen fabric with reduced durability, whereas high twist results in a hard, crinkly yarn that can cause fabric distortion.
