Distribution Value
Quantitative value describes the extent to which a sizing film surrounds the exterior surface of a yarn rather than penetrating its core. In the production of linen textiles, sizing encasement ratio determines the balance between internal fibre bonding and external abrasion resistance. A high ratio indicates that most of the chemical solids sit on the surface to form a protective shell.
Microscopic Balance
Laboratory analysis of yarn cross sections reveals how the size paste has migrated into the spaces between the flax fibres. If the ratio is too low, the size penetrates too deeply and makes the yarn overly stiff and brittle. If it is too high, the surface film may flake off during weaving because it lacks sufficient anchorage to the yarn body.
This balance is essential for managing the friction generated by the reed and the heald wires.
Operational Control
Mills adjust the squeeze roller pressure and the viscosity of the size box to hit the target ratio for a specific yarn count. Lowering the pressure generally increases the encasement on the surface while higher pressure forces the liquid into the yarn interior. Accurate control of this parameter reduces the amount of dust and lint that accumulates under the loom during high speed operation.
