Density Parameter
Loom component specifications define the number of dents per unit width in a wire reed, establishing the spatial density of warp ends across the fabric formation zone. Reed sett controls the horizontal distribution of linen yarns and determines the grey width of the cloth as it leaves the beat up line. Chinese flax weaving operations select specific reed counts in metric dents per ten centimeters or imperial dents per inch to achieve target thread densities in finished linen textiles.
The metric applies exclusively to the open spacing of the reed wires, stopping at the point where finished fabric density is altered by wet finishing contraction.
Beatup Dynamic
Steel reed blades push inserted weft picks against the cloth fell while maintaining equal spacing between adjacent flax warp ends. Reed sett interacts with the denting plan, which defines whether one, two, three or four linen yarns pass through each individual dent opening. Coarse flax yarns with irregular natural slubs require wider dent spacings to prevent excessive yarn on yarn friction during shed changes.
High sett values combined with multi end denting increase abrasive wear on delicate wet spun linen, raising warp breakage rates during continuous high speed machine runs. Loom technicians adjust warp let off tension to balance beat up forces against the chosen reed density.
Finishing Contraction
Fabric width contracts during wet processing, scouring, bleaching and drying stages as flax yarns crimp and relax. Reed sett establishes the off loom grey dimensions required to yield the specified finished width and warp count per centimeter specified in buyer contracts. A linen fabric intended for ninety picks per centimeter after shrinkage must be formed at a lower reed density that accounts for anticipated width relaxation during hot water scouring.
Quality laboratories measure grey fabric sett against the loom setup sheet before dispatching fabric rolls to the finishing division. Discrepancies in the original reed calculation lead to non compliant finished fabric weights and immediate export lot rejections.
