Unfinished Weight
Material weight before finishing represents the total mass of the fabric immediately after it is cut from the fabrication loom. The raw off loom mass includes the weight of the warp and weft yarns as well as any sizing agents applied to the yarn before processing. This measurement is recorded in the grey fabric log at the end of each shift.
It is used to check if the loom tension and yarn density are within the specified limits.
Weaving Control
Processing parameters must be tightly monitored to ensure the uniform quality of the linen cloth. Technicians use the raw off loom mass to evaluate the consistency of the weft insertion rate and warp tension across different loom shifts. If this mass varies, it suggests that the loom is experiencing tension fluctuations that could lead to visible defects in the finished cloth.
The mill supervisor compares these values to the target yarn consumption rates to identify machines that require mechanical calibration or timing adjustments.
Finishing Estimate
Finishing mills rely on this initial weight to calculate the expected yield and shrinkage during washing and bleaching. Knowing the raw off loom mass allows the chemist to prepare the correct concentration of scouring and bleaching agents for the treatment bath. It determines the final density of the finished fabric after shrinkage occurs.
