Moisture Specification
An international testing standard defines the moisture percentages used to calculate the commercial mass of textile shipments. Under ISO 6741 commercial regain, specific moisture values are assigned to flax, linen yarn and woven fabrics to determine their official trade weight. This calculation accounts for the natural moisture-absorbing properties of bast fibres, ensuring that transactions are based on dry mass plus a standardized moisture allowance.
It applies directly to commercial disputes and contract valuations in global textile trade.
Commercial Weight
Because flax is highly hygroscopic, its weight changes continuously depending on the humidity of the warehouse or shipping container. Spinning mills in China dry sample skeins to a constant bone-dry weight in a ventilated oven, and then add the moisture percentage specified by ISO 6741 commercial regain, which is twelve percent for flax yarn. This adjusted weight forms the basis of the commercial invoice, protecting both the exporter and the buyer from paying for transient water weight or losing revenue due to dry-out.
The standard eliminates the variability of environmental humidity from the financial valuation of the yarn.
Trade Impact
Trade contracts specify this standard to ensure fair pricing during maritime shipping. Deviations from the calculated mass are checked by third-party testing houses before final settlement. This standard remains the primary reference for resolved billing disputes in the international linen market.
