Tenacity Specification
International testing specifications for scutched or combed flax fibre establish standardized procedures to measure breaking tenacity using flat fibre bundle testing equipment. Adherence to ISO 3060 flax standard provides mills and raw material buyers with a quantified breaking force value expressed in centinewtons per tex. The test procedure utilizes a Stelometer instrument operating at a zero or three point two millimetre gauge length to fracture aligned flax bundles.
Specimen preparation involves careful combing, trimming and clamping inside specialized bundle jaws under fixed spring tension. This method applies exclusively to parallelized flax fibre strands, excluding spun yarns and finished woven fabrics.
Bundle Testing
Laboratory technicians prepare flat bundles by combing out short fibres and residual shive particles until a uniform parallel ribbon remains. Securely clamped jaws hold the prepared specimen under controlled pretension before the loading mechanism applies increasing force until complete bundle failure occurs. The broken bundle fragments are weighed on an analytical balance accurate to one hundredth of a milligram to calculate linear density.
Dividing the measured breaking force by the bundle linear density determines the specific tenacity rating of the flax lot.
Spinning Assessment
High bundle strength indicates mature, well-retted bast fibre suitable for wet-spun high-count yarns. Low tenacity ratings alert spinners to potential yarn breakage and reduced weaving efficiency.
