Laboratory Analysis
Chemical solubility testing provides a standardized method for determining the chemical composition and purity of processed bast fibres. The fried test extraction determines the amount of non-cellulosic material remaining on flax fibres after boiling them in a specific alkaline solution. This laboratory protocol measures the weight loss to estimate how much pectin and hemicellulose have been removed.
The outcome helps mills assess the uniformity of the preceding retting phase, allowing them to adjust subsequent mechanical settings to prevent fibre breakage. When the extraction percentage falls below the specified threshold, the material is designated for coarse yarn production.
Retting Evaluation
Proper retting ensures that the fibres can be separated from the woody stem without damage. Mill technicians apply the fried test extraction to samples from each incoming batch to decide whether the flax requires further chemical treatment or is ready for mechanical scutching. The resulting percentage is recorded on the raw material quality certificate.
Yield Verification
High concentrations of residual hemicellulose increase yarn stiffness and reduce spinning efficiency. By using the fried test extraction, the spinning mill verifies that the purchased yarn or fibre batch meets the contract specifications for processability. The test prevents weak yarn runs by identifying under-retted material before it reaches the drawing frames.
