Coating Treatment
Protective coating application involves immersing yarn in a starch or polymer bath to improve its mechanical properties for weaving. Because linen fibres are relatively brittle and prone to shedding, flax yarn sizing provides the necessary lubrication and surface cohesion to withstand the rapid movements of the loom. The process concludes with drying the yarn on heated cylinders to set the protective film.
Application Parameter
Mills adjust the temperature and concentration of the size mix based on the yarn count and the final fabric density. Heavier yarns require deeper penetration of the adhesive to prevent the outer fibres from fraying under the friction of the reed. If the size is too brittle, the coating cracks and causes the yarn to snap during the shedding cycle.
Precise control over the pick up percentage ensures that the yarn remains flexible while gaining tensile strength.
Removal Requirement
Sized yarns must eventually undergo desizing after the weaving stage to allow dyes and finishes to penetrate the cloth. Residual size interferes with the absorption of bleaching agents and leads to uneven colouration in the final product. Complete removal is verified by testing the fabric with iodine or similar chemical indicators before the cloth proceeds to the dyeing range.
