Raw Assessment
Agricultural raw material evaluation requires precise measurement of the water content within the plant stems prior to industrial decortication. In the flax processing sector, flax straw moisture determines the plasticity and ease of separation of the fibre from the woody core. This measurement is taken immediately upon receipt of the crop at the mill gate.
Standard resistive or dielectric sensors are utilized to record the values across multiple bales in each shipment.
Storage Effect
Biological activity within stored straw is highly sensitive to liquid levels. High flax straw moisture stimulates fungal growth and enzymatic degradation that can destroy the valuable long fibres. When the water content exceeds eighteen percent, the stems begin to rot in the warehouse.
To prevent this, mills reject damp shipments or run them through drying tunnels.
Process Standard
Industrial scutching and hackling lines operate most efficiently under controlled environmental conditions. When flax straw moisture is maintained between twelve and fourteen percent, the wood separates cleanly without tearing the bast bundles. This optimal level ensures that the yield of long line fibre is maximized while generating minimal short tow.
The testing laboratory records these percentages on the intake docket to establish the baseline for the scutching room settings. This documentation helps the operator adjust the roll clearance and beater speed for each batch. If the moisture is too low, the straw becomes brittle and shatters, reducing the average fibre length and lowering the commercial value of the output.
