Fibre Uniformity
Fibre diameter variance across a processed batch defines the fineness distribution of flax stocks before they enter the spinning frames at a Chinese mill. Quantitative analysis of this attribute establishes the variance within a single bale or between mixed lots, setting the threshold for subsequent mechanical performance during the draw frame operation. Technicians record these metrics in the internal quality control ledger to verify whether the incoming supply aligns with the requirements for fine count yarn production.
Distribution Control
Operators measure the fineness distribution by sampling thousands of individual flax fibres using automated airflow sensors or microscopic laser diffraction units. These devices map the frequency of different micron values across the sample to create a curve that represents the total mass of the collection. A narrow curve indicates high consistency, while a broad curve warns of potential weak spots or breakage when the material encounters the high tension of the spinning process.
Mills must identify the presence of abnormally thick fibres, known as neps or shives, because these heavy particles disrupt the flow of finer material during carding and lead to uneven yarn diameter. Each production batch undergoes this testing stage immediately after degumming, as the results dictate the machine speed settings for the next phase. Buyers set a tolerance limit for this distribution in their purchase contracts to ensure that the yarn meets the physical strength demands for high speed weaving on air jet looms.
If the measured data shows a deviation beyond the agreed limit, the facility must divert that specific lot to the production of lower grade household textiles rather than high value apparel fabric.
Metric Variance
Acceptance criteria for fabric production depend on the gap between the mill standard and the specific request from the textile brand. Consistent raw material allows for predictable output, whereas volatile measurements force constant adjustments to the drafting rollers. Precise tracking of these values during the sorting phase provides a reliable indicator of the overall spinning stability.
