Process Definition
Slashing treatments applied to coarse bast yarns deposit protective film formers onto porous fibre bundles assembled without hot-water drafting. Warps woven from these yarns require dry-spun flax sizing to withstand the friction and tension cycles of rapier weaving. Dry-spun flax yarns contain intact pectin matrices, uneven bundle diameters and high surface hairiness compared to wet-spun equivalents.
The sizing stage coats outer fibres, smooths loose ends and bonds internal voids to achieve weavability.
Mechanical Behaviour
Surface irregularities and chemical compositions characteristic of dry-spun yarns demand specialized size chemistry and tension control. Because dry-spun flax lacks the smooth, consolidated cross-section of wet-spun yarn, it absorbs sizing liquor rapidly like a wick. Formulations for dry-spun flax sizing usually rely on low-viscosity modified starches blended with acrylic polymers to ensure moderate penetration without over-saturating the yarn core.
Heavy size penetration makes the flax brittle, destroying the natural bending recovery required during shed crossing. Tension must remain low throughout the creel and drying cylinder zones, typically below zero point eight centinewtons per tex, preventing premature yarn stretching and permanent elongation loss. Squeeze rolls running at moderate loads compress protruding fibrils into the core matrix, smoothing the yarn profile without crushing uneven slubs.
Production Record
Loom room performance metrics govern whether a sized warp beam passes buyer audit requirements. Mill inspection departments track end breaks per hundred thousand picks, associating high break rates directly with uneven dry-spun flax sizing application. Operational data sheets document sizing bath concentration, drying cylinder temperatures, beam tension and sizing add-on percentages.
