Kinetic Action
The mechanical force applied by the reed to push each newly inserted weft yarn into the fabric fell defines the loom action at the boundary of the cloth. These beat up dynamics determine how closely the weft yarns can be packed together in a linen structure. Because flax is a stiff, inelastic fibre, this motion must be carefully controlled to prevent yarn damage.
The action combines velocity and pressure at the moment of impact.
Loom Adjustment
Adjusting the reed movement on the loom alters the acceleration of the reed as it approaches the fell line. To optimize beat up dynamics, technicians configure the eccentric drives and crank angles of the loom. In Chinese linen mills, this setting is specified in the loom room manual to balance cloth density against yarn abrasion.
A sharper, more rapid strike is used for high-density linen fabrics to ensure the weft yarn settles before the shed closes.
Structural Soundness
Inconsistent pressure at the fell line causes visible thick and thin bands in the finished linen fabric. Poorly tuned beat up dynamics lead to reed marks and variable picks per inch, which degrades the cloth rating during final inspection. This variation can ruin a batch of export-grade fabric.
