Accounting Allowance
Industrial inventory management defines the acceptable discrepancy between the recorded weight of raw materials entering a mill and the weight of finished goods and recorded waste. This margin, known as the unassigned loss tolerance, accounts for minor moisture evaporation, fiber dust, and measurement errors that cannot be tracked. The allowance is expressed as a small percentage of the total processed volume.
This threshold prevents unnecessary investigations into minor discrepancies. For linen spinning mills, this threshold is typically set at two percent of the total input of scutched flax over a thirty-day production cycle.
Mill Mechanism
During flax processing, tiny fiber fragments escape as dust, and moisture levels fluctuate based on the factory’s relative humidity. These untrackable changes fall under the unassigned loss tolerance, allowing the mill’s mass balance sheet to reconcile without requiring manual audits of every gram. If the discrepancy exceeds this tolerance, it suggests theft or systemic weighing errors.
Financial Settlement
Regular calibration of the electronic scales and monitoring of the extraction system help keep the unassigned loss within the established limit. When the loss exceeds the tolerance, the production manager must initiate a review of the scutching and combing departments. Tight controls prevent unnoticed material losses.
