Weight Calculation
Mathematical adjustment ratios define the standard moisture weight that must be added to the dry mass of a textile material for commercial trading. The standard regain formula uses the dry weight of flax yarn to calculate its official invoice weight based on the accepted moisture regain of twelve percent. This equation is used worldwide to resolve disputes regarding the weight of textile shipments.
It ensures that both the buyer and the seller agree on a consistent trade weight regardless of environmental conditions during transit.
Commercial Standard
Commercial invoices must reflect the legal trade mass rather than the variable weight measured on the factory floor. When applying the standard regain formula, the chemist first determines the oven-dry mass of the yarn sample. This dry mass is multiplied by the factor of one point one two to determine the commercial weight.
This calculation prevents conflicts caused by the natural capacity of flax to absorb water from the air during storage in humid warehouses or ports. The resulting value is recorded on the shipping manifest as the official transaction weight for customs clearance.
Moisture Correction
Spinning mills must perform this calculation on every batch to maintain accurate production yields. If the standard regain formula is not used, the reported yield will fluctuate wildly based on the daily weather and humidity in the mill. This calculation brings consistency to the mill’s financial accounting.
