Fluid Behaviour
Mechanical behaviour of liquid polymer solutions where flow resistance decreases as the deformation rate increases allows for smooth chemical applications on textile fibres. In linen finishing and sizing, shear thinning viscosity ensures that the starch or synthetic polymer flows easily through the squeeze rollers of the sizing machine. This property is essential for applying a uniform protective coating to the warp yarn.
When the yarn is moving quickly, the size becomes thinner and penetrates the yarn structure more effectively.
Sizing Application
High viscosity at low shear rates prevents the sizing solution from dripping or pooling when the machinery slows down. Adjusting the formulation to control shear thinning viscosity improves the efficiency of the weaving process. If the solution remains too thick under high shear, it can create a crust on the yarn that flakes off during weaving.
Proper formulation results in fewer loom stoppages and less waste.
Fabric Finishing
Liquid coatings must distribute evenly across the fabric surface during high speed padding operations. Sizing polymers with shear thinning properties are easier to wash out during the desizing stage before dyeing. This clean removal prevents patchy dye absorption and ensures a uniform color across the finished linen fabric.
