Force Distribution
Mechanical leverage systems that distribute downward force onto the top rollers of a spinning frame ensure that the flax strand is gripped firmly during drafting. This assembly uses a weighted bar, or saddle, that sits across the roller bearings to apply a concentrated load. Through saddle weighting, a single spring or weight-loaded arm can distribute pressure evenly across both the feed and delivery zones of the drafting system.
This ensures that the roving is held securely, preventing uncontrolled fiber slippage and reducing the frequency of drafting waves. In wet spinning, the force must be precisely calibrated because wet flax fibres have high tensile strength but are easily damaged if the roller pressure is too high.
Pressure Adjustment
Proper load balance on the rollers is maintained by adjusting the tension on the saddle mechanism. If the weight is unevenly distributed, the top rollers will flex, leading to uneven drafting and yarn of irregular thickness. Technicians use specialized gauges to measure the force applied by each saddle, ensuring that it remains within the specified range for the yarn count being produced.
Mechanical Wear
Routine inspections must monitor the condition of the saddle components to prevent mechanical failures. Over time, the contact points of the saddle can wear down, leading to a loss of pressure on the rollers. Replacing worn saddles and lubricating the pivot points keeps the drafting system operating smoothly, which helps to maintain the high quality of the spun yarn.
