Physical Metric
Atmospheric moisture absorption capacity defines the relation of held water to oven-dry mass in textile materials. Measuring the moisture regain rate ensures that raw flax shipments are priced and processed at standard moisture levels. The physical value differs from moisture content because it uses dry weight as the denominator.
Measurement Standard
Dry weight determinations occur in ventilated laboratory ovens where fibre samples undergo heating until they reach a constant dry mass. Subsequent exposure to a standard climate of twenty degrees Celsius and sixty-five percent relative humidity allows the moisture regain rate to reach equilibrium. Technicians weigh the conditioned sample to calculate the percentage of weight gained through water vapor absorption.
This testing follows ISO standards to prevent disputes between yarn suppliers and cloth manufacturing mills.
Processing Influence
Mechanical behaviour during spinning relies on the presence of bound water to maintain fibre flexibility and prevent static electricity accumulation. Maintaining a moisture regain rate of approximately twelve percent prevents the brittle fracturing of flax fibres during drafting and twisting operations. High humidity levels in the spinning room keep the yarn pliable, which reduces yarn breaks and improves lint control on the shop floor.
Dry fibers lose their natural pliability, leading to frequent interruptions and lower drafting precision.
