Mechanical Loading
Structural forces applied to the rigid frames holding heald wires dictate the clarity of the shed opening in modern looms. The harness frame tension regulates how tightly the frames are held by the driving levers and springs during high-speed shed changes. Correct adjustment is required to prevent excessive vibration and mechanical wear on the loom components.
Shed Separation
Insufficient frame load causes delayed movements and incomplete separation of the warp sheet. Under these conditions, the harness frame tension must be increased to ensure that the yarn threads clear each other cleanly for the weft insertion. This adjustment prevents the rapier or air jet from catching loose threads and causing stoppages.
Yarn Strain
Dynamic forces exerted by the heald frames on the warp yarns can exceed the tensile limit of spun flax if the settings are too rigid. When harness frame tension is set too high, it exerts excessive stress on the heald eyes, which in turn causes rapid abrasion and micro-cracking of the sizing film on the linen yarn. By optimizing this mechanical parameter, weavers reduce warp fatigue while maintaining high-speed loom operation.
This balance is especially critical when weaving heavy linen fabrics where yarn density increases the mechanical resistance faced by each individual frame during the shedding cycle.
