Efficiency Indicator
Percentage of long staple line flax recovered from the raw scutched flax after the mechanical combing process. The hackling yield ratio determines the profitability of the initial processing stages because the long fibers are more valuable than the short tow fibers that are removed. This figure is calculated by weighing the input of raw flax against the output of the hackled bundles.
Processing Impact
Mechanical hackling involves passing the flax through a series of pins that become progressively finer to align the fibers and remove shives. A high hackling yield ratio suggests that the flax was well grown and properly retted, allowing the bundles to split easily without breaking. If the pins are too aggressive or the flax is too dry, the fibers snap and the ratio of long fiber to waste drops.
Mill managers use this ratio to evaluate the performance of the hackling machine operators and the quality of the raw material from different suppliers.
Cost Calculation
Financial planning for the spinning mill relies on accurate yield data to set the price for the finished yarn. Every percentage point gained in the hackling yield ratio reduces the raw material cost per kilogram of line flax.
