Protective Compound
Aqueous chemical mixtures applied to warp yarns prior to weaving provide the necessary abrasion resistance and tensile strength to withstand mechanical stress on the loom. The specific flax sizing formulations utilized in linen mills typically consist of modified starches and lubricating agents. These chemical blends coat the yarn surface and penetrate the fiber core, bonding the loose external fibers to the yarn body.
This treatment prevents the yarn from untangling or shredding under the action of the loom’s reed and heddles.
Mill Application
Industrial preparation of the sizing liquor requires precise temperature control to ensure uniform viscosity and starch gelatinization. Processing flax sizing formulations at incorrect temperatures causes uneven pick-up, leaving some yarn sections under-sized and vulnerable to breakage. The prepared mixture is transferred to the size box of the slasher, where warp yarns are submerged and dried on steam-heated cylinders.
Monitoring the solid content of the bath via refractometer ensures the correct coating weight is maintained throughout the run. Mills often adjust the proportion of synthetic binders when running fine yarns to achieve the required tensile properties without making the yarn too stiff.
Acceptance Criteria
Performance evaluation of these mixtures focuses on viscosity stability and film flexibility during finishing. A standard sizing formula must exhibit stable viscosity over a twelve-hour shift to prevent variation in pick-up. Low flexibility leads to the compound cracking off the yarn during weaving, while poor solubility prevents complete removal during the subsequent scouring process.
