Mechanical Conditioning
The application of controlled stress to fiber strands prior to spinning or testing removes natural slack and aligns individual bundles. Accurate fiber pretensioning ensures that the subsequent measurements of tensile strength or thickness are consistent across different samples. Without this initial tension, the elasticity of the flax may yield misleading results during quality assessments.
It prepares the material to respond uniformly to high speed mechanical forces inside the processing equipment.
Testing Reliability
Uniform fiber pretensioning is a requirement for standard laboratory procedures where sample consistency determines the export grade of the lot. Operators apply a small weight to the vertical strands to straighten them without inducing permanent deformation or elongation. This step facilitates the measurement of average bundle diameter across thousands of individual tests.
When fiber pretensioning is skipped, the recording of crimp or micro irregularities becomes unpredictable. The tension value used depends on the specific mass of the fiber bundle being evaluated in the dry state.
Equipment Setup
Machines designed for high speed flax processing incorporate fiber pretensioning units to steady the roving as it enters the drafting zone. Stabilizing the strands at the point of contact prevents the bunching that otherwise causes uneven spinning. This mechanical bias remains necessary until the twist is fully inserted into the yarn body.
