Machine Configuration
Spacing of the pinned steel bars in a gill box determines the degree of mechanical control exerted over flax fibres during the drafting phase of spinning preparation. This arrangement, characterized by the faller bar density, regulates the movement of individual strands as they pass between the feed rollers and the drawing rollers. Proper configuration is documented in the machine setup manual for each specific yarn count to ensure uniform sliver weight.
Drafting Control
High concentration of pins per inch prevents the shorter flax fibres from floating uncontrolled in the draft zone. This guidance is especially important when processing fine slivers for high-count linen warp yarns. If the density of the pins is too low, the resulting sliver will exhibit thin and thick sections that cause defects in the finished cloth.
Process Yield
Combing mills adjust this pinning ratio to match the average length of the raw flax batch being processed. When working with long line flax, a lower faller bar density is selected to prevent fibre breakage and reduce the load on the drive motor. Conversely, short tow fibres require a tighter arrangement to extract remaining waste and produce a cohesive sliver.
Monitoring the output yarn evenness allows the mill technician to fine-tune the bar spacing to maximize the throughput of the preparation line. These adjustments are registered in the mill shift report to ensure consistency across different production runs.
