Structural Deviation
Physical deviations within cloth construction compromise visual uniformity and mechanical integrity. In linen manufacturing, fabric defects denote yarn faults, missing picks, oil contamination, and structural irregularities that degrade the finished bolt below target specifications. Flax yarns naturally exhibit irregular thick places termed slubs, which inspectors distinguish from true manufacturing faults during quality evaluations.
Standard grading separates raw fibre inconsistencies from mechanical damage caused by broken reed wires or dropped warp ends. Certified inspection reports record these blemishes on fabric inspection logs, cross-referencing warp direction and pick location.
Inspection Protocol
Quality verification stations examine moving cloth rolls under calibrated lighting to identify surface imperfections. Modern Chinese linen export facilities evaluate fabric defects under the international four-point system designated in ASTM D5430 or national standard GB/T 22866. Human inspectors stand before illuminated tables, measuring the physical length of each fault along the running fabric.
A fault extending under three inches receives one penalty point, whereas continuous flaws longer than nine inches incur four penalty points. The inspection record tracks warp streaks, thick bars, dropped picks, and temple bruises per one hundred linear meters. Inspectors also document slub clusters that exceed the acceptable aesthetic tolerance established by the brand specification.
When cumulative points on an individual cloth roll surpass forty points per one hundred square meters, the piece receives downgrade classification from grade A to grade B.
Commercial Penalty
Acceptance thresholds determine commercial pricing and shipment clearance for export consignments. High counts of fabric defects trigger price discounts or outright lot rejections by apparel buyers. Mills log final point tallies on shipment compliance sheets, confirming whether the batch meets export contract limits.
Excessive fabric defects directly reduce mill realization prices across European and American garment programs.
