Diagnostic Device
Portable electronic instruments that measure moisture content by evaluating the conductivity of a material provide rapid feedback during the receipt of raw materials. The electrical resistance pin meter utilises two or more metal probes that are inserted directly into the flax bale or packed linen yarn. Since water conducts electricity far better than dry cellulose, the electrical current flowing between the pins correlates with the amount of water present in the sample.
This measurement helps prevent the storage of damp flax, which otherwise leads to rot and fibre degradation.
Measurement Execution
Operating the instrument involves pushing the steel pins firmly into the dense fibrous mass to secure a steady contact. The electrical resistance pin meter translates the measured conductivity into a moisture percentage displayed on a digital screen. Operators must take multiple readings at different depths and locations within the bale to account for uneven moisture distribution.
This diagnostic step occurs at the receiving dock of the spinning mill to verify compliance with the purchase contract.
Process Limitation
Resistance measurements are highly sensitive to both temperature and the salt content of the processed flax. When temperatures rise or the material contains high concentrations of natural minerals, the device can overestimate the moisture level. Spinners therefore use the oven drying method for official disputes, relying on the portable meter only for quick preliminary screening.
