Chemical Classification
Synthetic film-forming agents derived from polyacrylic acid and polyacrylate esters supply the elastic binding needed during warp preparation. When applied to coarse bast yarns, acrylic sizing polymers operate alongside modified starches to impart elasticity that pure polysaccharide films lack. Pure starch tends to form brittle encasements that crack under alternating bending loads on modern rapier looms.
Acrylic sizing polymers modify the dried starch matrix, lowering film stiffness while boosting tensile elongation. Chinese weaving mills handling wet-spun or dry-spun linen warps track polymer solubility and total solids content against incoming specification sheets to prevent viscosity drifting in the size trough.
Adhesion Dynamic
Liquid sizing formulations deposit an external coating that grips the irregular flax surface through mechanical interlocking. Flax fibres display natural cross-markings, nodes and variable bundle diameters that resist uniform wetting by standard potato or corn starches. Adding acrylic sizing polymers lowers the surface tension of the aqueous mix, promoting penetration into outer yarn voids without saturating the yarn core.
Core starvation leaves the structural flax core unaffected, while surface wrapping binds protruding fibrils against the main stem. Slashing operators regulate roller squeeze pressure between twelve and twenty-five kilonewtons to balance pick-up. Insufficient squeeze leaves gummy surface lumps that clog heddle eyes, whereas excessive pressure strips the synthetic film from flax ridges.
The resulting composite film withstands the frictional rub of drop wires, harness frames and reed dents during high-speed shed opening.
Desizing Requirement
Alkaline washing stages in the preparation plant dissolve synthetic size residues prior to dyeing or bleaching. Unlike native starches that demand enzymatic digestion with amylase, acrylic sizing polymers dissolve rapidly in warm water supplemented with sodium carbonate or dilute sodium hydroxide. Residual acrylic films reject vat and reactive dye liquors, causing pale streaks across finished grey linen fabric.
The finishing facility records desizing completeness through iodine spot tests for starches and solvent extraction checks for synthetic co-binders on final inspection dockets.
