Coating Treatment
Chemical treatment of high-quality wet spun flax yarn with film-forming agents protects the yarn from the abrasive forces of high-speed weaving. The process of wet spun linen sizing applies a protective layer of modified starch or synthetic binders to lock down loose surface fibers. This treatment is necessary because the wet spinning process creates a smooth, compact yarn with low hairiness but high stiffness.
The sizing must provide both tensile strength and surface flexibility to prevent yarn breakage during shedding.
Application Parameters
Sizing wet spun linen requires careful control of the sizing bath temperature and the squeeze roller pressure. When wet spun linen sizing is conducted at low temperatures, the viscosity of the sizing liquor increases, which leads to excessive size pick-up and a stiff yarn. Squeezing the yarn through rubber rollers at the correct pressure ensures the size penetrates the yarn core rather than just coating the surface.
Sized yarn must be dried to a controlled residual moisture level of approximately eight to ten percent to maintain its flexibility. The combination of uniform chemical distribution and precise drying prevents the sizing film from cracking under the cyclic stresses of weaving.
Quality Evaluation
Laboratory testing of sized yarn focuses on measuring the increase in tensile strength and the decrease in yarn hairiness. Sized yarns are subjected to cyclic abrasion tests that simulate the action of the loom’s reed and heddles. A high-quality sizing treatment should increase the yarn’s abrasion resistance by at least fifty percent while maintaining sufficient elongation to prevent brittle breaks on the loom.
