Sliver Recovery
Industrial carding processes convert the short, tangled by-products of flax combing into spinnable tow yarn. The tow fiber conversion calculates the weight percentage of processed tow sliver recovered from the coarse combed waste. This calculation helps the mill monitor the efficiency of its secondary carding lines.
Carding Performance
Short flax fibers are difficult to process due to their irregular length and high friction. To optimize the tow fiber conversion, the mill adjusts the carding rollers to align the fibers without causing excessive breakage. This setting is checked regularly to ensure that the sliver weight remains within the tolerance required for spinning coarse, durable yarns.
The technical supervisor logs these adjustments on the machine performance card.
Economic Output
Waste minimization is critical for maintaining the profitability of linen production facilities. When the tow fiber conversion reaches the target rate, it reduces the volume of fiber sent to low-value non-woven or industrial markets. The processed tow yarn is then sold for blending with cotton or used for heavier fabrics.
This recovery of value is documented in the mill’s material tracking ledger to adjust raw material costs. Successful recycling of these shorter fibers ensures that the mill operates at maximum material efficiency.
