Yield Calculation
Measurement of the efficiency of flax processing determines the proportion of valuable line fiber compared to byproduct tow. In flax processing mills, the tow conversion rate calculates this yield ratio during the scutching and hackling stages. This metric is logged on the mill production summary sheet to evaluate the performance of the processing line and calculate the cost of the raw material batch.
Machine Calibration
Running the hackling machines at incorrect speeds or pin densities can damage the long flax fibers, turning them into short tow. The tow conversion rate increases when the machinery is poorly maintained or when the flax straw is too dry and brittle. Technicians use this rate to adjust the moisture conditioning parameters of the flax stalks before they enter the processing line.
These settings are recorded on the shift maintenance card to prevent excessive fiber breakage during processing.
Quality Control
High rates of tow generation reduce the volume of premium line fiber available for high-end textiles. Standard mill acceptance criteria for raw flax processing require the tow conversion rate to remain under twenty-five percent. If the rate rises above this limit, the processing line is stopped for re-calibration of the rollers.
