Wastewater Analysis
Oxygen consumption measures the amount of chemical reagent required to oxidize the organic matter removed from fabric during the initial cleaning stage. The size desizing COD reflects the concentration of starch and other sizing agents that enter the mill’s effluent stream. This value is a primary indicator of the environmental impact of the finishing department.
High levels of chemical oxygen demand require extensive treatment before the water can be safely discharged.
Effluent Loading
When the woven linen is washed to remove the protective size, the starch molecules dissolve into the water. This organic load creates a high size desizing COD that must be managed by the mill’s water treatment plant. Monitoring this value helps the mill evaluate the efficiency of its washing ranges and the biodegradability of its sizing recipes.
If the load is too high, it can overwhelm the biological treatment tanks, leading to fines or plant shutdowns. Mills often switch to synthetic or modified starches to reduce this load. Accurate measurement of the oxygen demand is a requirement for compliance with national environmental standards.
Treatment Capacity
The volume of the treatment tanks is often the limiting factor for the mill’s total finishing output. Managing the size desizing COD allows the factory to maximize its production without exceeding its environmental permits.
