Moisture Standard
Moisture calculations in textile transactions require a reliable method to establish the baseline dry mass of raw bast fibres. In these laboratory procedures, oven dry weight testing determines the weight of a flax sample after all extractable water has been vaporised. This testing provides the starting figure for calculating the commercial weight of the shipment under international rules.
Heating Method
Lab technicians place the wet flax specimens in a ventilated drying oven heated to 105 degrees Celsius. This oven dry weight testing method keeps the samples in the heat until successive weighings show no further change in mass. If the drying temperature is too low, some moisture remains bound to the cellulose, which makes the dry weight appear too high.
The technician records the final stable weight on the official moisture certificate. This method prevents the inclusion of water weight in the taxable weight of the batch.
Yield Calculation
Correct dry weights are used to calculate the moisture regain percentage for the commercial invoice. The mill uses these figures to settle weight disputes with the raw material supplier. Accurate testing protects the buyer from paying for excess water.
This data is kept to prove the quality of the raw material.
