Instrument Standard
Standard reference procedures adjust electronic testing equipment to ensure accurate water-mass percentage readings in natural fiber shipments. For the quality control department in a spinning mill, moisture probe calibration maintains the accuracy of handheld resistance or capacitance meters used on incoming flax bales. This procedure aligns the instrument’s electronic outputs with known moisture levels determined by oven-drying tests.
Regular calibration prevents the mill from accepting wet bales that could rot in the warehouse.
Reference Adjustment
Technicians use sealed reference blocks of known electrical impedance to verify the probe’s accuracy across a range of moisture levels. If the instrument’s reading deviates from the reference block’s stated value, the technician adjusts the internal circuitry or updates the digital correction factors. This action is repeated at several points to ensure a linear response across the entire testing range, confirming that both low and high limits are functioning properly.
The calibrated meter is then certified for use in the mill’s receiving area for the next ninety days, which protects the company against inaccurate readings during high-volume import inspections.
Mill Validation
Production managers rely on calibrated meters to prevent damp flax fibers from entering the spinning line where they could cause thread breaks. When moisture probe calibration is neglected, the risk of yarn defects increases due to uneven drafting and rotting in storage. The results of the calibration are recorded in the mill’s equipment logbook to satisfy ISO quality standards.
This record provides the necessary traceability during external customer audits.
