Analytical Visualization
Laboratory analysis of flax fiber bundles uses high-magnification optical instruments to observe the internal structure of individual cells. Through cross section microscopy, technicians can determine the degree of fiber maturity by measuring the ratio of the lumen to the overall cell wall thickness. This measurement helps spinners predict dye uptake and mechanical strength before spinning begins.
Poorly matured flax fibers lead to uneven dyeing and higher yarn breakage rates during subsequent spinning stages, making early structural inspection essential for high-end linen production.
Preparation Procedure
Preparation of specimens requires mounting the bundle in a synthetic resin and slicing it into ultra-thin discs with a microtome. Slices of linen yarn or fiber must remain completely flat and undistorted to ensure accurate measurement under the lens. A poorly prepared slice yields distorted shapes that skew the calculated roundness and wall thickness.
Structural Evaluation
Evaluation relies on comparing the captured images with standardized reference plates to classify the flax batch. Technicians measure cell circularity and count the number of fibers per bundle to assign a raw material grade. This grading system ensures that only fibers of consistent structure proceed to the spinning frames, preventing weak points in the finished linen yarn.
