Volume Accounting
Accounting for the volume of short fibres removed during the hackling process allows a mill to track its raw material yield. A comb waste credit represents the weight of flax tow and noils set aside after the long line fibres are prepared for spinning. This balance is recorded in the mill production log to reconcile the initial weight of scutched flax with the final output of hackled bundles.
Reclamation Method
Recovery of these secondary fibres involves collecting the material from the circular or vertical combs and weighing it at the end of each shift. The comb waste credit is then applied to the spinning lot to ensure the inventory management software displays the actual consumption of premium raw flax. High levels of waste often indicate a brittle fibre batch or a machine setting that is too aggressive for the specific moisture level of the straw.
This tracking ensures the mill knows exactly how much long fibre remains for the highest quality yarns.
Financial Impact
Crediting the waste ends when the material is sold as tow for lower grade yarns or technical textiles. Because the comb waste credit reduces the cost basis of the primary yarn lot, it is a required figure for auditors checking the efficiency of the spinning line.
