Process Metric
Statistical quality metrics tracking pre-spinning yarn preparation measure the proportion of flax rove charges that fail to achieve targeted chemical-mechanical processing limits during lignin removal. Spinneries monitor the cmp failure rate to assess the effectiveness of the scouring and boiling stages that prepare coarse flax fibres for wet spinning. If the rate exceeds the internal threshold of the mill, it indicates that the chemical bath or mechanical pressure was insufficient to split the fiber bundles into fine, spinnable strands.
Technical Impact
High failure rates during chemical-mechanical preparation lead to incomplete pectin dissolution, which subsequently causes frequent yarn breakages on the wet spinning frame. The resulting spun yarn suffers from elevated hairiness and unevenness, directly increasing the number of defects found during winding. When the boiling temperature deviates by more than three degrees Celsius, or the sodium hydroxide concentration falls below the mill’s specification, the lignin remains locked within the fiber bundles.
This metric is recorded in the daily mill laboratory logs alongside the yarn strength test results, identifying batch-to-batch inconsistencies in the boiling autoclaves.
Quality Standard
While a mill’s internal target for this parameter is typically set to maintain high spinning efficiency, the final linen fabric buyer does not evaluate the pre-spinning preparation directly. Instead, the buyer’s acceptance criteria focus on the tensile strength and dye uniformity of the finished cloth, which are the downstream consequences of a well-controlled preparation phase.
