Commercial Mass Standard
Commercial mass measurement of yarn adjusts the actual dry mass to include a standardized moisture allowance for billing. Raw fiber and yarn transactions utilize yarn billable weight to ensure that both buyer and seller use a consistent standard regardless of weather conditions during shipping. This adjusted mass represents the fair trade value of the delivered yarn package.
Mills compute this metric to prevent fluctuations in ambient humidity from altering the invoice total.
Regain Adjustment Calculation
Calculation of this mass requires determining the oven-dry weight of a sample yarn skein and then adding the official moisture regain percentage. The standard moisture regain for linen yarn is twelve percent of its oven-dry mass. If the laboratory finds that the shipment has an actual moisture regain of fourteen percent, the excess water weight is deducted from the gross shipment weight to determine the correct billing mass.
Conversely, if the yarn has dried out during transit to ten percent, the calculated weight is adjusted upward to compensate the seller. This dry-testing procedure must follow ISO standards to be accepted by international arbitration courts. The resulting adjusted mass represents the true commercial quantity of the material.
Financial Transaction Base
Using this standardized weight protects both parties from the financial impact of natural moisture fluctuations in linen products. Weaving mills pay for actual fiber content rather than absorbed atmospheric humidity. Sellers are protected from claims based on weight loss that occurs during hot and dry shipping transits.
This standard practice is integrated into all raw material contracts and quality verification protocols.
